Our experience has been that the early use of the Twin Block appliance usually eliminates the need for headgear, extractions and the pain and expense of mandibular advancement surgery.
Bionators, Frankels, and Herbst appliances are also used in an attempt to promote mandibular jaw growth. But the Twin Block has been found to be a better alternative because it is not cemented and the separate upper and lower appliances make it easier for speech and eating.
The Twin Block appliance promotes a physiologically correct and esthetically pleasing facial profile. We do a great deal of work with Twin Block which we construct in our own lab. We have published an article on the Twin Block - see our article in "The Functional Orthodontist".
